What lighting work actually involves

Layout changes are wired from the switch back, not just at the fitting — so where lights are controlled from, and how they're grouped, is part of the job rather than whatever the existing wiring happens to allow.
Outdoor and garden lighting circuits are run at the correct depth with the right outdoor protection, because a circuit outside has to be built for the conditions rather than treated as an indoor circuit that happens to end outside.

Common questions
- Can you add downlights to an existing ceiling?
- Usually yes, as long as there's access from above (attic or a floor void) or we're happy to chase and make good below. We check joist spacing and insulation clearance before quoting, since downlights need fire-rated fittings where insulation sits close to the ceiling.
- Should I switch to LED lighting?
- Almost always worth it — LED uses a fraction of the power and fittings have come down a lot in price. The only catch is checking existing dimmer switches are LED-compatible, which we check as part of the job rather than leaving you with flickering lights.
- What's different about outdoor lighting wiring?
- Outdoor circuits need weatherproof fittings, cable run at the correct depth if buried, and RCD protection as standard. It's not the same job as an indoor light with an outdoor-rated bulb — the whole circuit has to be built for the conditions.
- Can I just change a light fitting myself?
- Swapping a bulb or a shade, fine. Changing the fitting itself means working at the ceiling rose with the circuit live unless it's isolated properly, so we'd always recommend getting it done rather than guessing at the wiring.
