What a full house rewire actually involves
A rewire replaces the whole installation: every circuit back to a new consumer unit, new earthing and bonding, new sockets, switches and lighting points, and new supplies for the shower, cooker, immersion and outside. On the sort of houses we do most — 1930s to 1970s stock around south Dublin — that usually means rubber or early PVC cable, no earth on the lighting, one or two sockets per room and a board with rewireable fuses. Patching that is money spent twice.
It starts with a survey and a fixed written quote, itemised by circuit and accessory so you can see what you're paying for. On site we work in staged sections rather than pulling the whole house dead: first fix cabling in one area at a time, then second fix, then testing and energising. You will lose power in the room being worked on, and there is chasing and lifting of floors — we tell you exactly where before we start rather than after.
It finishes with full testing and a completion certificate for the installation. If you're renovating, the honest advice is to rewire before plastering and flooring go down; if you're not, we can run cable through existing routes and keep making-good to a minimum, and we'll be straight with you about which walls can't be avoided.

Common questions
- Does my house actually need a full rewire?
- Not always. Rubber or fabric-sheathed cable, no earth at the lighting or a fuse board with rewireable fuses usually means yes. A tidy 1990s installation with a couple of tired circuits normally doesn't — a periodic inspection tells you which situation you're in before you commit to the cost.
- How long does a rewire take?
- The schedule depends on the size of the house, access, and how much making-good is needed. We give you a day-by-day schedule with the fixed quote, not a rough guess, so you know what's happening on which day before work starts.
- Can we stay in the house during the work?
- Most people do. We work section by section and restore power at the end of each day, so you keep heat, hot water and a working kitchen. It's dusty and noisy while it runs — there's no way around that part.
- Do we get paperwork at the end?
- Yes. Full test results and a completion certificate for the installation, which is what you'll need for a sale, a letting or an insurer.
